There are such places on the Earth, to which we go back to all life long. There is music which we listen to all
time long. There is a particular record which I have been listening to for years: for me the best LP of Polish
progressive rock of the 70's. I wonder sometimes why this LP despite its perfection, has been ... somehow
neglected. It's hardly difficult to come across anything on this LP in any of music reviews. It's likely because
the group that recorded it is being perceived as one playing popular music or if you like "big beat". I mean
obviously Skaldowie and their LP "Krywań, Krywań" .
In order to understand the phenomenon of this record we shall go back a few years in the past. The mid of 60's was dominated by so called
"main stream" music. Then the groups of youth stream used to play melodic rock'n'roll songs also known as "big beat" in Poland and
Czechoslovakia. Lots of these songs were inspired by Polish folk what was the result of then valid propaganda slogan: Polish youth sing
Polish songs. In such (music) atmosphere Andrzej Zieliński set up with his colleagues from Cracow Sextet in the middle of 1965 the group
Skaldowie which got relatively fast a stage success. Their music education (well the passages, games and etudes, that nobody likes to
practise!) as well as diverse music interest of each of the member result in fabulous music variety: from simple songs enriched by baroque,
renaissance or music of 20 s, through pieces full of rhytm'n'blues both the original one as well as "the Polish from under Tatra mountains".
Personally, I do not advocate moving "the capital to Cracow", but the fact that the musicians come from Southern Poland and in particular
Cracow, had crucial impact on the music repertoire. Thanks to cooperation with such lyrics authors like L.A.Moczulski and A.Osiecka, who
were as much mastered text as much as the band notes, it is a great pleasure to listen to plenty of their songs up to now. A trip to the USA
and purchase of new musical instruments, among other the legendary Hammond's organs, played en essential role as pointed out by the band
itself in their interviews and by their biographers . The LP's "Od wschou do zachodu słońca" and "Ty" clearly demonstrate band's search
for new directions within then Polish music. Despite these attempts their songs remained still dominated by pop music. The band after a few
years break entered in May 1972 a studio to record enough music for two LP's. One of them is
recorded May, 22-23.
I assume this LP was a with huge surprise to a lot of Skaldowie fans. Already the very first notes of the title suite ( as long music songs were
named what always led to outrage by the musical purists) were announcing a new unknown until then, music. The guitar riff intensified by
both violin and organs and then garnished by highlands music. This was followed by musical "slalom", full of quotations from folk, jazz and
classical music. One has the impression to listen to Jon Lord's or Keith Emerson's style. But by his minor coquette Andrzej Zieliński delivers
evidence of his identification with mainstream rock. I do not perceive this today as some 30 years ago, as plagiarism.
" Krywaniu, Krywaniu high ..." You are great ! No doubts !
There four other songs on this LP that have similar construction but individual features. "Fioletowa dama" is an instrumental piece where both
Zieliński brothers, Andrzej and Jacek, as well as Jerzy Tarsiński demonstrate their talents to improvisation. One encounters sound close to
Latino-American rock along typical Polish folk melodic line in the piece "Juhas zmarł". "Gdzie mam ciebie szukać" is dominated by guitar riff
and fantastic improvisation by Tarsiński. "Jeszcze kocham" is the only song that deserves to be considered as hit. Despite its perfection this
LP was not fully accepted by the music market and little by little disappeared form the market. This is surprising particularly as this LP turned
an export article of this band.
This LP was published 1973 in two neighbouring countries: GDR and USSR. The Russian version of LP with the title "Skaldy" Mełodia
33 CM 03823 (stereo) and Mełodia 33 D 033373 (mono) contained following pieces:
1. Medytacje wiejskiego listonosza (Russian)
2. Prześliczna wiolonczelistka (Russian)
3. Jeszcze kocham
4. Góral (corresponding to the song ~ Juhas zmarł)
5. Cała jesteś w skowronkach
6. Wszystko mi mówi że mnie ktoś pokochał
7. Krywaniu, Krywaniu mój ty wysoki
The "Russian" version of song "Krywaniu, Krywaniu" was longer (22:07) than the Polish one and the record was not just equivalent of the
Polish "Krywań, Krywań". It also contained earlier hits by Skaldowie and hence was a compilation. Russian record label Mełodia issueing
the record in several different covers.
The fans were offered this fabulous music almost 30 years later thanks to 4 record companies. The first one is WYDAWNICTWO 21,
that published all pieces issued abroad on one CD with the title "Krywań ~ Out of Poland" (No.21.004, year: 1999).
1. Krywaniu, Krywaniu mój ty wysoki (A.Zieliński, trad.)
2. Góral (A.Zieliński, M.Jaasne)
3. Jeśli kochasz (A.Zieliński, A.Jastrzębiec-Kozłowski)
4. Gdzie mam ciebie szukać - live (A.Zieliński, E.Lipska)
5. Juhas zmarł (A.Zieliński, M.Jaasne)
6. Krywań, Krywań (A.Zieliński, trad)
7. Heidelberen (A.Zieliński, M.Jacobs)
This CD deserves particular attention as it contains songs very rare even on the Polish market. The record label Yesterday published 2000
series of digipack versions with 60's and 70's recordings by various Polish bands among others Skaldowie. The records "Krywań, Krywań"
and "Stworzenia świata część druga" can be found on one CD (Yesterday CD "Skaldowie (4)"830988508 ~ 2 ). The same music was
issued again by Yesterday 2002 on one CD number ...........830988031-2, with new cover and CD numbered 83988508-2; a vinyl replica
(limited edition) was published 2004 by Yesterday within Record Club10, number PNCD 848. The record label Andromeda issued CD
"Krywań, Krywań" in the end of 90s but quality of sound is not good. The song "Krywaniu, Krywaniu" can be found on box "Skaldowie
Antologia" (No.5267532). This 3 CDs issued by Pomaton / EMI Poland in 17th June, 2000.
It is still not the end of the story:
1./ concert given by Skaldowie, autumn 1972 in St Petersburg, was published in 2007. Among the pieces played there were three
recordings from LP "Krywań, Krywań": "Krywaniu, Krywaniu", "Juhas zmarł" and "Jeszcze kocham". This record in digipack form with
the title: "Skaldowie-Cisza krzyczy-Leningrad 1972-an official live bootleg", was published by company Wydawnictwo 21, number: 21.017.
This issue was approved by band's members. I have to add that the initiator and a "spiritus movens" person behind alls activities in the whole
publishing process was Maciek Kabata. I am probably not mistaken to call him ... "the seventh Skald".
2./ Polish record label, Polskie Nagrania, reissued vinyl record in 500 copies limited edition in december 2007.
3./ German record label, Amiga/BMG, issued 3CD's box set "Die Skalden - Die Grossen Erfole" in 2007, number: 88697064992.
Among the pieces recorded there was one recording from LP "Hello No.10", the song-"Heidelberen".
I hope that some of you reading this text would get interested in this record as it is the only way to appreciate its value, the value of music
levelling the greatest of progressive English rock. The music by Skaldowie offers plenty of examples pertaining to rock's mainstream.

German record label AMIGA issueing a compilation serial "Hallo" published the piece "Der Hirtenjunge ist gestorben" (ie "Jak Harnaś
umierał" or "Juhas zmarł") recorded in GDR on number four (LP "Hallo 4" 855334). Another song by Skaldowie was published a year

version of the suite "Krywaniu ..." was published 1973 on LP "Hallo 12" 855 342, duration 19 minutes 53 seconds.
4./ Andrzej Zieliński and Stanisław Deja met in June 2007 in Switzerland. There they thought of giving the old Skaldowie's songs a fresh look.
The new versions would be based on two pianos play by both of them. A few months later, the music was presented in Poland, during the gig
at DK Żary on 30.10.2007. About two months later during their performance at Radio Krakow scene on 04.12.2007, they recorded a live
album. The album called "Skaldowie na dwa fortepiany" that included the suite "Krywaniu, Krywaniu" was then released by Polish Radio
(PRCD 1141) on 14.07.2008. In December 2008, the same company reissued the album as a digipack. It was a limited edition, there are
only 500 copies of them.
5./ Fans pressed the group to play the suite during the gigs. Also, the album itself gained a wide critical acclaim and sold very good, so
Krywań, Krywań" once again started to be the cream of the crop of every concert of Skaldowie. If interested, please check the links below
